White House Unveils New Sanctions Targeting Russia in Wake of Alexei Navalny’s Death

The White House’s decision to impose new sanctions on Russia highlights the fact that this resistance is being maintained and Russia is being held responsible. As nations work together on sanctions to apply punitive measures, the primary concerns of the international community are on Russia’s anti-western economic, and military might.

United States – The White House says it is planning to impose “specifically directed” additional ‘major sanctions’ against Russia due to the passing of opposition leader Alexei Navalny in an Arctic jail.

Sanctions Package Details

The Pentagon said Monday that the package would be presented this Friday at the next meeting of the National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. He declined to provide specifics, denoting that the US government policy does not permit such details to be shared or did not explain how they would add to the already harsh sanctions the US imposed on Russia in response to the invasion of Ukraine, as reported by Associated Press.

Kirby confirmed this just as a reminder that the sanctions, which will be imposed two years after the beginning of the Russian invasion, will come along with the additional simultaneous sanctions focused on Mr. Navalny’s death, as reported by Associated Press.

While acknowledging that the US had not ascertained Navalny’s cause of death, Kirby maintained that Putin had final culpability.

“Regardless of the scientific answer, Putin’s responsible for it,” he told reporters.

US Treasury’s Stance

The US Treasury refused to disclose the details of the new sanctions. Brian Nelson, Under Secretary of Terrorism and Financial Intelligence of the department, is in Europe currently to continue working on Russia sanctions, which will be launched for the second anniversary.

“The global coalition imposing unprecedented sanctions on Russia’s war machine has thrown sand in the gears of the Kremlin’s efforts to equip and supply its military. President Biden recently expanded Treasury’s authorities to target those funding Russia’s war production efforts – even if they’re located in third countries – and Treasury is aggressively pursuing those who attempt to evade our sanctions,” the Treasury Department said last week. “Multilateral sanctions and export controls have forced hard tradeoffs for Putin and damaged his ability to project power now and in the future.”

Policy Proposals for Russia

A series of policies have been suggested by policy experts targeting the lifting off of Russia from its invasion funds. These proposals range from the seizure of Central Bank funds, housed mainly in Europe, to lowering the price cap of the Group of Seven oils, as reported by Associated Press.

The White House’s announcement of further sanctions against Russia highlights the progress made in resolving the geopolitical issues and keeping Russia accountable. Collaboration among the international community on punitive measures has a dual focus of the impact on the Russian economy and its ability to exert power after which the shape of global response on the recent development is determined.
